Listening to Pekka Hämäläinen’s books rn. Will post a few excerpts below, so far really good for ethnographic-national history angle to early American (ethnic) history, because it restores geopolitical power to the history of peoples like Iroquois, Creek, Lakota etc.

The land has grown dry though the fire of Bleezilopchtli has dimmed. These are dark days, and such days remind us of Duetzopotl in exile… He promised to return to our realm in such times from across the cruel sea… to bring the end of time itself.

Cortes would rebuild a new Tenochititlan, and despite the impression modern Mexico City leaves, he intended it to be a lake Venice just like Tenochititlan. He succeeded, but the lake would be drained in the late 18th and 19th centuries. https://t.co/MjecFCvUnT

: 240,000 Mexica died in the city, followed by further plagues in the next few decades. Thomas notes that without these, it might have been the case that Mexico would have resembled British India. But with this decline, a total transformation was effected.

I’ve got to admit, I’ve never much understood the obsession over Columbus. I understood Northern attempts to include Italians into American identity, but not the vitriol or centrality of Columbus in recent controversy. Turns out it was just foreigners resentful of US schools.
