@troofenjoyer: Indeed this is why Wooden in the latter part of the Speeches of the High One (Hávamál) lists his great songs (ljóð). These are runes, the esoteric secrets which He received from the world tree. It is surely no coincidence that his Vedic equivalent Lord Shiva gives out tantras!

@troofenjoyer: — Back to the meaning of the word rune. In the early Elder Futhark inscriptions, such as Noleby (1) and Einang (2), the word is used in the singular. If it means "letter" like stave undoubtedly does, this would be nonsensical. So we must realize its true meaning.

@troofenjoyer: while (at least 500 years) at this point. Of course a serpent has no hair, but this did not matter for the poet. Interestingly, the serpent may be depicted on this Migration Period (that's half a millenia before the poem) bracteate from Jutland.

@Josh_Spring1 Yeah, the boar had great significance for Germanic warriors. It's very feriocious. (pic: Anglo-Saxon Betty Grange helmet). The Swedish Ingling king Edgils (Aðils, Ēadgils) had a helmet called Hildisvín (Hild-swine, where Hild is a walkyrie whose name means ‘war’).

So true! These formations are not modern reconstructions; they are known from ancient sources (pic: my translation from a month ago).—To draw up a formation was to filch (fylkja), and a formation itself was called a filching (flyking). Both derive from folk, orig meaning “troop”.

Sadly Sibbi Foldarsson, who must have been a chieftain of some renown in order to have his own retinue with talented scolds (poets), is not known from any literary source. He was a Dane, and it has been theorized that he died in the battle of Fýrisvellir. https://t.co/HeGuzqtYUP

: He may also have been Christian; on the back of the stone is a mangled Latin inscription, that appears to say In nomine Iesu; “in the name of Jesus”. It is clear that whoever made this inscription was not familiar with the new letters; it is barely legible.

@troofenjoyer: But of course the kennings make this very hard to understand for normies. You may know kennings from poems like Beowulf, where they take the form of expressions like “whale-road”; the sea. The Scoldish poets also inherited this, but they took it way further.

@troofenjoyer: First a little about the stone. It stands at a field at Karlevi, on the island Öland outside of Sweden. It was originally set between two burial mounds, which have sadly been plowed away. There is apparently a 1600s drawing showing them, but I can't find it. This is what remains:

@troofenjoyer: While we have a large (~6000 according to http://skaldic.org) corpus of Scoldish verses that can be securely dated to the Viking age through linguistic and metric analysis, almost all of them survive only in manuscripts several centuries younger, like the 1390s Flateyjarbok.
