Happy independence day, my Lithuanian friends! 🇱🇹❤️🇪🇪 https://t.co/kpLYnUfkWe
: Looked for a picture of the old Lithuanian flag and came across this banger, the flag of the Grand Duke Gediminas Staff Battalion. The other Lithuanian military flags are pretty cool too. ngl liths prob have the coolest national symbols out of the 3 Baltic states.

@Somnipalatinsk Apparently he also claimed paternal descent from the royal family of the 16th c Khanty principality of Konda, hence his name. It does make me curious since the last Kondin prince lived in the 18th century from what I know. The lost lineage still lives?

Kirov's original Udmurt name was Kylno. In ancient times it was one of the most important cities of Vyatka Udmurts. According to folklore, a badźym kuala "supreme sanctuary" used to stand there in honour of the local deity Imma-voršud, associated with the image of the dove. https://t.co/4ddeHs8HvN
: In the 12th century Kylno fell under the raids of Novgorodian ushkuiniks and Maris lead by Chumbylat. Udmurts eventually abandonded Kylno and migrated to surrounding Mari and Udmurt territories. The city was called Khlynov, derived from Kylno, up until 1934.

Reconstruction of a Finnish man's clothes from the 7th-9th c. Gotta be one of my favourite Iron Age Finnic clothing reconstructions, they keep getting better. Probably not entirely accurate still tho, not sure what's up with that beanie, and Finnic men of the time had long hair.

Haplogroup distribution of various Hungarian groups. The most common haplogroup among conquering Hungarians was N. What's interesting is that it's branch N1a which today appears only in small patches in China and Central Asia (and Ugrians?). Wonder what's the story behind this.

When in the forest at winter I never stop to be amazed by the beauty of pines. Such glorious red trees standing out in the white of winter. Anyway I haven't been able to draw much recently, so here's smth simple. Trying to learn to use colours more and focus less on detail.

Also, many western scholars of the past such as Adam of Bremen have considered Finnics/Chudes to be descended from Scythians, which is somewhat true. Early Finno-Ugrians mixed quite a lot with Indo-Iranians from Abashevo, Sintashta etc cultures and borrowed many of their words. https://t.co/zz8cZwQ3QM https://t.co/MSbRAQFOu1
: I'm unsure if any genetic calculations have been done to determine how much of Finnic genes are of Iranic origin, but my guess is about 15%. It was the Indo-Iranians who taught Finno-Ugrians many important technologies such as agriculture, the wheel and horse husbandry.

The idea that Estonians have lived in Estonia for thousands of years is surprisingly new. According to Æstonia Rediviva, a chronicle written by Baltic German David Werner in the 17th c, Estonians travelled and waged war around the ancient world, finally settling on the Vistula...

I think the Finnic settlements in Sweden first appeared around the birth of Christ, it's totally believable they'd be assimilated within 500 years. A lot of them became Varangians later on, this is also where Rurik had his roots.
Nemets @Peter_Nimitz
@Peter_Nimitz: Some Scandinavian men in eastern Sweden in 3rd-6th centuries AD carried Uralic patrilines despite having very little Uralic autosomal DNA. One contemporary woman from 5th century AD northern Sweden has a tiny amount of detectable Uralic ancestry.

According to one theory the Maydells descend from native Estonian nobility who had ruled in Maidla before the crusades and became vassals of the Germans afterwards. In the early documents about them, the Maydells are described as having close ties to Estonians. https://t.co/EdMruj2Wck

Because of the strong association of long hair with rulers and warriors in folklore it's been thought that in the ancient past long hair was reserved for the Ob-Ugric upper class and that it was later on that the peasants started growing their hair out to imitate the nobility. https://t.co/mAKomK9s7V
