An old method that is starting to see a large increase.. line spiking. Where an iron rod is driven into an active cable line to short it. Once the block goes down, the home invasions/cable theft starts.

A reminder that copper sells for R60 a kg at illicit scrap yards - and heroin for R30 a hit. The biggest driving factor of copper cable theft on the West Rand is drug usage.

Here's something that I haven't yet discussed - cable theft falls into 2 categories. Theft of copper for profit, and vandilization for criminal activities. This box was ripped to pieces causing a power trip, which allowed a few houses to be hit. Image courtesy a friend.

Once copper cable is stolen, it is cut into brick long lengths before being stripped. Here you can see the outer sheaths of the cables as an example. This facilitates easier trade (yes, literal trade) for drugs and other items depending on cable thickness.
